Vintage MCM Italian San Marino Ceramic Wall Plate
Vintage pottery/ceramic round wall plate, featuring a design from a young woman, produced in Republic of San Marino by the manufactury "Libertas" in the 1950s.
The wall plate is embellished with a young lady portrait, hand sketched in sgraffito technique onto the ceramic on a mate black background, decorated with a "Effetto Lacca" (enamel effect), hand painted enameled glossy glazes (white, baby blue, dark blue and orange) in a irregular "frame" with a glossy red glaze. The wide edges are decorated in "Smalto Roccia" or rock glaze, a highly textured fat lava glaze.
This plate is a beautiful example of the transition from the 50s to the 60s in design - The woman in sgraffito technique is a design element of the 50s, the fat lava is used by ceramicists of the 60s.
If you didn't know...The Republic of San Marino is the world's smallest republic (24 sq. miles), the third smallest country in Europe, behind the Vatican and Monaco and it is completely surrounded by the country of Italy. It is internationally famous for two products – its postage stamps and its ceramics. Artistically decorated ceramics made their appearance in Republic of San Marino in the mid twentieth century.
