Why Vintage Decor Makes a Unique Gift
If you are looking for a unique gift for a friend or loved one or how about the person that just has about everything… have you thought about gifting a Vintage décor item?
Just like with vintage clothing, it's great to mix in vintage finds with new modern pieces while adding in some character that you won’t find from the big chain stores. I definitely have some pieces in my house from mostly from the sixties, some from the seventies but I feel the more you mix the eras, the more natural it looks.
Not quite sure what vintage décor is?
This term falls into the following categories:
- vases
- brass figurines
- ceramics
- pottery
- and little things (sometimes called knickknacks) wall art, textiles and books that you can use to decorate around your home.
Vintage Wall Art
My next choice for a vintage gift would be wall art. Whether it's canvas or an oil painting or even a wall hanging, it doesn't necessarily have to be something that was painted or drawn. I think it's a really great way to fill a blank space, wall or even create a gallery wall. My goal is to create a gallery wall in my own home and mix mediums. It’s about showing creativity and going outside the box.
If choosing art or prints have you confused why not try a wall hanging. They immediately add texture to a wall while adding a bohemian touch to home décor. Here’s a favorite of mine that I recently purchased. Here’s also one vintage tip I'll suggest that I think is a nice idea if, for example, you have a picture that you can't afford to have it framed, or it's an odd size. You can use a vintage pant hanger found at a thrift store or flea market. It is unexpected way of hanging that item.
Vintage Books
The fonts offer a little bit something more to me in my opinion than most modern books. And you know, what some modern books publishers will copy what a book used to look like. I'll give them credit. It looks good. But I personally find the old copy better. It is something about the smell of old books. There's something very comforting about an old book smell to me. I like the texture of the paper when I slowly turn the pages.
If you're actually going to read them, it's even better. I think we, as a society, don't read enough. I'm definitely guilty of it and I definitely want to start reading more books because as a child, I was a voracious reader.
Vintage books are really great gifts for everyone in your life. I also love giving them as unique baby shower gifts that they will come to treasure forever.
Hi, I'm Melissa and I've been scouring flea markets and vintage/antique shops in New York City and across the globe for over 20 years. As a former NYC Fashion Industry veteran and SEO wiz, I love the thrill of finding an item that will add that unique touch to your wardrobe or home décor.
Why throw it away when you can add to its story?
